The Ragnaia of Villa Montalvo

The Ragnaia of Villa Montalvo is the bush of trees, that winds along the embankment of the Marina torrent, from the Villa to the end of the park. It  has had an intervention for the repair of the installation of the green. The operation has involved, besides  the pruning and the replacement of some old trees, the arrangement of the undergrowth, the regulation of the small ditch that runs inside, and the repair of the small bridges that allow you to cross it.

The building of the Ragnaia starts in 1670, when the owner of the Villa, don Ferdinando Montalvo, who was keen on hunting, put among the embellishment works of the property, the bush for the capture of the birds. The manufacture had also the aim to consolidate the embankment of the Marina torrent, and to prevent the possible landslides during the frequent floods.

During the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries the Ragnaia of Villa Montalvo is famous in the Florentine area as a reserve of hunting and meeting place for the Florentine noblemen; it is also maintained and exploited during the twentieth century up to the 40s.

Nowadays the Ragnaia has no hunting function and its trees give shade and relief for people who walk inside or along the little path that borders it, but if you pause it's possible to appreciate the native installation and understand how the capture of the birds was.
